News of the week

  • Graduation caps and gowns – Attention seniors: If you haven’t already ordered your cap and gown, please do it today to assure it arrives on time for graduation! Cost is $40. You can find the order form and more info at albanyschools.org/2023. Orders are due April 17.  
  • 'Short Play Festival' submissions sought – The Theater Ensemble is asking playwright hopefuls to submit their original short works by June 2. The festival is slated for fall 2023. Learn more.
  • Student projects spotlight CTE – Aspiring filmmakers in Media Arts teacher Theresa Story’s class spotlighted their school and fellow students in a series of short videos about career and technical education classes and programs.   • CTE students on the road – Barbering students coiffed the heads of an assistant principal and a social studies teacher Thursday at a career fair at North 91¸£Àûµ¼º½ Middle School. Barbering was just one of the attractions: students and staff shared insights and information about several career and technical education (CTE) offerings at our school. .
  • Art Erbe featured as Top Teacher – Construction technology teacher Art Erbe was featured as a Top Teacher for the 2022-23 school year from several hundred nominated! WNYT NewsChannel 13 ran a story about him Wednesday. .
  • Tonko talks turkey with students – Congressman Paul Tonko spent an hour in the school library Tuesday morning, discussing his job as an elected leader and taking questions about his work. Learn more.
  • Student report helps lead to statue removal – Junior Franz Gopaulsingh is making a difference in our city! from WNYT NewsChannel 13 and learn how.
  • Beauty in the lab – On Monday, students in Martha Bresonis' Science of Cosmetology class spent time in the lab mixing up skin care products like lip scrub, sugar scrub, bath bombs, body butter, lip gloss, hair oil, scalp oil and facial toner from a variety of ingredients. .
  • Falcon robotics fare well in Rochester – Robotics Team 1493 made it to the semifinals of the Finger Lakes Regional FIRST Robotics Competition at the Rochester Institute of Technology last weekend and took home an award for creativity. Learn more.
  • SkillsUSA winners – Congratulations to senior Cassandra Colton-Hines and junior Abda Toumbou, who earned medals at the March 16 regional SkillsUSA competition. Colton-Hines took third place in the commercial baking contest,  and Toumbou took second place in the restaurant service contest. Both are students of Chef Lisa Valentine, who heads up the school Culinary Program.
  • Summer Youth Employment Program application deadline approaching – Friday, March 31, is the last day to submit an application to the City of 91¸£Àûµ¼º½'s 2023 LIGHT Summer Youth Employment Program, which will run from July 10-Aug. 11. Youth employees will work up to 20 hours per week, earn $14.25 per hour and must meet all eligibility and orientation requirements to participate. Learn more.

Important reminders

  • Class of 2023 merch – Show your Falcon pride and help raise money for your senior prom by buying 91¸£Àûµ¼º½ High merch! When you do, the cost of tickets lowers for everyone, and the prom is more accessible to all. .
  • Free spa services for 55+ – Cosmetology students are offering free salon services to any city residents aged 55 and up on Tuesdays and Thursdays through May. An appointment is required. Learn more.
  • Author Candace Fleming coming Wednesday – Visiting authors are back at 91¸£Àûµ¼º½ High for the first time since the pandemic, and Candace Fleming will be in the library on March 29. She'll speak to some classes, and all students are invited to participate in a competition to read Fleming's books. Learn more.
  • OVATIONS: Save the date – 2023 OVATIONS will be held Friday, June 9, at the Italian-American Community Center at 5:30 p.m. Similar to the former PTA Founders Day, OVATIONS will recognize individuals throughout the school district for their volunteer work.
