When a school is identified as academically underperforming by State Education Department standards, a receiver is appointed to help it.

In Sheridan Prep's case, the receiver is Superintendent Kaweeda G. Adams, who is given increased authority to make changes directly to the school, including changes to curriculum, staffing, budgeting and more.

The placement of a school under superintendent receivership is a consequence of it being identified for Comprehensive Support and Improvement based on the state’s accountability system under the federal Every Student Succeeds Act.

Receivership schools are required to submit plans for improvement and a timeline to the State Education Department.
