On Thursday, third grade engineers at Giffen Memorial Elementary School raced carts they built as part of their study of the effects of balanced and unbalanced forces on the motion of an object.
The big race – under the guidance of science teacher Rebecca Bustelos – was the culmination of experiments with wheels, axles and cups. Students worked in pairs to build carts with the knowledge they gained from their experiments and then conducted trials to see which group’s cart would roll the greatest distance. During each trial, the class discussed which qualities helped roll carts the farthest.
Congratulations to Ranell and Yasir for designing the cart that went the longest distance and being the third-grade champions!
