Tony Clement Center for Education has a new principal.
The Board of Education appointed Michael J. Clavin to that role during its meeting Thursday night. Clavin will start at Clement on Sept. 29.
A veteran administrator, Clavin’s last post was as assistant principal of P.S. 316, an elementary school in Brooklyn. Before that, he spent five years as principal of St. Peter’s Elementary School in Hyde Park until that school closed.
He also was assistant principal at Martin Luther King Jr. High School in Hastings-on-Hudson.
Clavin began his career as a math teacher, teaching both math and physical education at Long Island Lutheran Middle and High School in Brookville for five years. He spent the next 14 years at John Ericsson Junior High School in Brooklyn, first as a math teacher for grades 7-12 and then a middle school dean; he also served as the school’s athletic director.
He also was an adjunct math professor at Dutchess Community College for five years.
Clavin holds a bachelor's degree in history and mathematics, and a master's degree in education from Fordham University. He obtained his school administrator/supervisor certification from Brooklyn College.
Clavin joins Assistant Principal Scott Thompson to round out Clement’s administrative team.
