May 18 is National Speech Pathologists Day!
Please join me in taking a moment to thank these outstanding professionals for the important role they play in supporting our students’ growth and success.
Speech-language pathologists study both the verbal means of communication, and the social aspects and understanding of communication. They work with students of all ages to assess, diagnose and treat speech, language, communication and swallowing disorders.
This field emerged in America in the aftermath of World War I, as soldiers returned with traumatic brain injuries. There are more than 150,000 speech-language pathologists working in the United States today, and schools are one of the top practice settings.
We are grateful to our speech-language pathologists for their work, and I am honored to recognize their many contributions throughout our school community.
