Tuesday’s rainy skies didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of Arbor Hill Elementary School families that came out for Community Literacy Night: Stories Under the Stars.

Kids read stories in tents alongside a “campfire.” No camping experience is complete without s’mores, and students got a chance to eat the yummy but messy treats.

And though clouds covered the stars outside, students could view the cosmos from inside what looked like a giant gray marshmallow – an inflatable planetarium set up in the gym.

Throughout the school there were 27 classroom doors elaborately decorated with themes from different books. Students and families matched doors with book titles and identified their favorite door.

The literacy theme was reinforced by people from reading-focused community agencies including the 91¸£Àûµ¼º½ Public Library. One of the groups, the RED Bookshelf, let kids choose and take home several books to keep.
